Forgotten Heros
I obtained my licence in the mid-nineties when grey imports of JDM classics grew popular. Dealerships and importers were becoming ubiquitous as was the second-hand market for these cars. Most were highly modified but, by virtue of Japanese emissions laws, relatively low mileage. Many of these cars were well supported by a growing network of specialist spare part importers, performance upgrades and some shared componentry with Australian-delivered vehicles. With the majority turbo-charged, tuning options were plentiful, offering young enthusiasts an entry into the performance scene at competitive pricing. Insurance companies also started to respond with similarly reduced policy costs.
Today's article is a homage to these forgotten cars. Cars that haven’t survived, or become as collectable as their JDM brethren. For the sake of order, I have decided to work through manufacturers in turn, focussing on less popular models that were still genuinely performance-orientated.
The Gentleman's Guide to Car Modification
What do I mean by a gentleman’s guide to modifying a car? What I’m implying here is that there is a conservative way in which to improve the performance of your daily driver without compromising ride quality, ruining the experience or producing a cacophony of pointless noise. Don’t get me wrong, pops, bangs, wastegate and intake sounds are great, but perhaps not essential to the kid's taxi service. The following is a guide to mods that will improve performance significantly without significant drawbacks.
Tuning - Part 4 Custom Tune
I’ve spent so much time and energy researching the tune to give up now. I have consulted tuning experts, engineers, car enthusiasts, and the internet. The result. I have decided to go with a custom tune by Evolve Technik. Why? The result. I have decided to go with a custom tune by Evolve Technik. Why? Evolve Technik was one of two tuners that provided an opportunity to discuss in detail their tuning process, and most importantly consider what it was I wanted from the tune.
Tuning - Part 3 Installation
So the Cobb Accessport finally arrived. I set aside some time to film myself installing the Stage 1 ECU and TCU tunes provided. I’ll post this video soon, and provide a link.
What we missed out on in Australia!
In Australia, we have produced some fantastic, inspired and outrageous cars over the years. However, as a smaller market, we didn't always receive some of the gifts from other manufacturers that arguably could have become icons down under. In this article, I will take a look at six truly cool cars that should have come to our shores.
Tuning - Part 2.5: The Decision
Tuning - Part 2: The Research
In this instalment, I will provide information on several companies and their tuning products. As mentioned, I am not a mechanic or tuning expert. Please do your research and use the information I have provided as a starting point for your decision-making process. The focus will be on what is generically referred to as stage 1 tunes. Stage 1 is the entry level of tuning, where no hardware modifications are required. The map simply rewrites the car's existing ECU to enhance performance across various parameters.
Tuning - Part 1:
I have decided to tune my car. Well, that’s not entirely true. When I bought the GTI, part of the reason was its ‘tune-ability’, and the access to a variety of high-quality aftermarket modifications. So essence I have committed to researching tuning options, with a date in mind for the tune. January 2024, the end of the warranty. I started some preliminary research on tunes, basically reading about the ubiquitous APR and COBB versions. Realising there are many different methods to go about tuning a car, thousands of different brands and an equal amount of variation on how these providers achieve their results, I decided to write this article.
Ongoing feature LAP 9: Coupes
The best coupes make my investigative diatribe's final instalment into the best cars of all time by body type. It is fitting that the coupe bookends this recurring piece as they have come to symbolise everything that is exciting, revolutionary and engaging in cars. Indeed you could make a case that coupes are the pinnacle of automotive design and engineering.
Ongoing feature LAP 8: Convertibles
Open-top motoring can accentuate the connection between man, machine and the elements of the open road. They inspire a sense of freedom, and despite the complexity of a folding roof, they often have an inherent simplicity about their design - lightweight, responsive handling and a willing engine sympathetic to the constraints of the chassis. Think MX-5, Alfa Romer Spider or MGB.
Ongoing feature LAP 7: People Movers
When younger my friends and I had an agreement, when we got married and had kids, we would never buy a people mover. If any one of us did, we would promptly hold an intervention to aggressively, yet necessarily, realign that person’s life choices. We felt it was impossible to look cool and feel good about one's self in a van. Sorry to anyone that owns a people mover. And I know if you have a lot of kids their utility is essential to making life easier. It’s just that their appearance and driving dynamics embody the antitheses of driving.
Ongoing feature LAP 6: UTES & PICK-UPS
Initially I had thought to focus on the utilitarian elements of utes and pick-ups, the best work horses fit for purpose, but that purpose is now as wide as the choice of vehicle available. So lets take a ‘greatest hits’ approach. Like a greatest hits album, the songs are eclectic and enjoyable, but don’t consistently meld through a coherent theme.
Wrenching
Today’s article is about exploring some rewarding, reliable and affordable cars that make for an engaging entry point into the world of car repair and modification.
Ongoing Feature Lap 5: SUV
The Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) globally is the most popular car choice for buyers and a hotly contested battleground for manufacturers. So much so that drive.com recently named the Ford Ranger its car of the year. No mean feat considering the haste in which we are moving toward electric cars. Look at the list of top-selling cars globally and 7 out of the 10 sit within the SUV category.
Ongoing feature: the best station wagons
For the most part, it is hard to look and feel cool in a station wagon, but over the years there have been some inspiring performers. Cars whose dynamics, engineering and appearance have set them apart from the average family car. Able to manufacture 'street cred' in the school car park.
The first instalment on the best driving roads in Victoria will explore the Black Spur of Healsville, out to Marysville, up toward Lake Mountain, and then down to Warburton through what is colloquially called the Reefton Spur.
Part 1: The Black Spur, Lake Mountain, and the Reefton Spur!
Ongoing Feature Lap 3: THe Best performance Sedans
The sedan segment is huge, encompassing utilitarian family and fleet vehicles, luxury, and sports cars. It is the most common shape; a three-box configuration has dominated car design and manufacturing for decades. It makes sense, engine, cabin and storage areas are defined, simple and easy to construct.
Ongoing Feature LAP2: The Best Hatch Backs
This market is perhaps the most contested segment by car makers today, with most offering some sort of ‘hot’ or ‘warm’ option. It could be considered the most important market today allowing everyone an entry point into the performance scene with options from budget to prestige, in different sizes, driveline options, and dynamics. With combustion engines under threat, a well-priced, practical car that offers good economy is a key ingredient for a successful hot hatch.
Ongoing Feature: The greatest cars of all time . . . According to body type.
Conversations about the GOAT (greatest of all time) can be relatively nebulous; each generation will write its own narrative about who or what is greatest of all time. The discussion can be heated, exciting and entertaining, but ultimately with no resolution in sight as comparing generations without bias is impossible. Perhaps, notwithstanding Pele, Michael Jordan and Don Bradman we may never agree on who is the greatest of all time. This discussion is probably even more complex in cars due to the different variants, purposes, pursuits, and cultures that exist within the car world.

The Fine Art of Parking!
Some 25yrs ago my friends and I would discuss the idea of selecting the perfect parking space to protect our beloved vehicle. The discussion was somewhat in jest, but also I think as early 20 somethings we did consider it a higher, more philosophical exploration of the mundane. Part of this discussion was developing a playbook of how to park, so here it is!
